On Sunday, under an ominous sky and the threat of thunderstorms, the G96white team battled a tough TFA team from Cincinnati, Ohio to a 1-0 victory to claim the U14 Presidents Cup National Championship for United FC. A first for a girls team at UFC.

g96nationalchampsUnited had faced TFA on Saturday and had won 2-1. They knew that it would be a struggle to turn around and beat them twice in 24 hours, but the girls were up to the challenge. UFC, changed their formation from the previous day from a 4-4-2 to a 4-3-3 in order to put more pressure on the opponents defense. This change worked and from the start United controlled the run of play, grabbing 12 shots in the first half and hitting the cross bar twice. However the Midwestern grit of Ohio held strong and the opponents endured the onslaught until about 2 minutes before halftime. United earned a free-kick just outside the 18 yard box on the right side. Once again, Mikayla Casey stepped up and hit a left footed free-kick to the far post. Danielle Tilton came flying in and headed the ball into the back of the net, to give the team a 1-0 lead going into halftime.

The team never looked back. For the second half we dropped back into a 4-4-2 to ensure that we had numbers behind the ball. Kate Sasser was a monster in the air, and controlled the midfield all day. UFC, had 6 good chances in the second half to seal the game, but the goalkeeper from TFA held strong. United's defenders, were consistent and handled anything that TFA threw their way preserving the shutout. UFC even endured a dangerous free-kick outside the 18 in the final seconds of injury time to seal the victory and the NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP.

On a side note, the girls send a special thank you to the entire club for the support they received from its members and Board. I am especially proud that the girls represented UFC with style, class and sportsmanship on the national level. I thank the parents of this team for their unwavering support of their daughters, and Karl and Carol for their hard work over the years.

Job well done team.

f_bastoneDefender Frankie Bastone has always excelled at United. He came over to United at age 15 from the Irvine Strikers soccer club and quickly earned a starting position. Over the years, Bastone has helped the current U18, who became the Coast Soccer League 2010 U19 Premier champs. The team then moved up to the number #1 team in the nation slot. Bastone has amazing physical speed, he is excellent in one versus one duels, and a great passer and crosser of the ball. United FC has benefited a great deal by having Bastone as a member.

I'm very proud to announce that Bastone has decided to further his college education as well as his soccer career at Santa Clara University. This weekend Bastone and United will be competing in the Cal South State National Cup Final Four as he and his teammates are two wins away from being crowned State champs.

United FC is proud to announce the following players will be continuing their playing days beyond Uniyed FC at the collegiate level. Congratulations ladies on the great achievement!

ERIC BISHOP CHOOSES WASHINGTON UNIVERSITY OF ST LOUIS

EBishopWashington University has landed one of UFC’s most prized possessions in Eric Bishop. I have been fortunate enough to have worked with over 400 student athletes and I have never come across a player who excelled as much on the soccer field as well as off of it.

Last weekend Eric led his United FC team to the club’s second ever Cal South National Championship. His list of success on the soccer field is endless; Dallas Cup participant, back to back Coast Soccer League Cup champions, Far West Regional League Spring and Fall champions, Surf Cup Champions, Surf Cup Finalist, CSL Premier Champs, North versus South Premier State Champions, Nomads College Cup Finalist, Far West Regional semi finalist, United Cup Champs, Albion College showcase finalist, and Cal South National Champs to name a few.

Eric Bishop has been a member of United FC since age 12 and has maintained an average GPA of 4.84.  He scored 2180 on the SAT'S and 35 on the ACT. Last season Eric was awarded National Merit semi finalist in 2010 upon taking the PSAT, an elite honor that less than one percent of high school seniors achieve nationwide. This year OC Registrar voted Eric Scholar Athlete of the Week as Eric has also excelled on his high school men's soccer team at Santa Margarita. It doesn't end there. Eric along with former United FC player Soo Joon Park started a club at their high school (SMC) called Welldone.

This club is a part of the larger Welldone organization that is run by four graduate students from Los Angeles. They are working to raise awareness on global water issues and provide clean water for communities in the developing world. Eric's club focuses specifically on building deep wells in rural villages in Ghana and water holding tanks for newly built schools in Kenya. This is something Eric is extremely passionate about and wanted to do his part to give back to the global community. Eric says, "As athletes we seem to take water for granted drinking bottled after bottled water at games and practices… it is such a vital, essential part of life and everyone deserves to have access to drinkable water."  Last year, Eric’s club raised approximately $15,000 in fundraisers, enough to supply a school in Kenya with a water tank.

Eric will graduate from SMC June 3rd and will then head to Boise, Idaho with his United FC team on June 19th as he and his teammates aim to capture the clubs first regional title.

We are all extremely proud of Eric and wish you all the best in your new endeavor at Washington University.

IMG_1996United FC outstanding forward Mario Soto has chosen Arizona Western to further his playing career and education. Soto has followed in the long and unending list of players who continue to use soccer as a vehicle to transport them to the next level.

This season Mario has led his United FC team to incredible heights, including CSL U19 Premier champions, CSL State Champs, back to back far west regional league champs, Surf Cup Premier flight finalist, 2010 Western regional semi finalist, and 2011 Nomads College coaches showcase finalist.

At the high school level Soto led his Capo High school varsity team to its first CIF finalist by being his team’s leading scorer. Soto will lead his United FC team as it prepares to challenge for its first ever Cal South National State title on April 30th.

We are all very proud of Mario and wish him and his family all the best in the fall as he moves to Phoenix, Arizona.
